Phoenicopterus ruber American Flamingo or Caribbean Flamingo
IUCN Red List - Species of Least Concern
|
The American or Caribbean Flamingo is a large flamingo closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo. Formerly considered conspecific with the Greater Flamingo, this species is now recognized as separate. The American Flamingo breeds in the Galapagos Islands, Venezuela, Colombia, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Bahamas, Hispaniola and Cuba. Sightings in southern Florida are usually escaped captive birds, but one banded individual from Mexico was sighted in the Florida Everglades National Park, and vagrants from Cuba are suspected. |
